Pouakai Crossing

Another fun filled weekend!! This time we drove down to New Plymouth where Mount Taranaki sits in Egmont National Park; the second largest mountain in the north island of New Zealand and about a 6 hour drive from Auckland. 8 of us pilled into the mini van after classes Friday and headed to the hostel for an early morning wake up call. Waking up at 5am we realized that the weather was not permitting for our trek to the summit of Taranaki (due to the first SNOWFALL!!). We then decided to do the crossing which goes from one end of the base of the mountain to the other and a 19 km one way hike (the trail marked in yellow on the map above). This took us most of the day to complete~roughly 7 hours, but going in with a bit of disappointment that we couldn’t hike up to the top, this trail definitely fulfilled our expectations. Honestly words can’t describe this experience, from the weather to the food to the people, 10/10!!
