Living the dream. Ate our free breakfast which consisted of toast and jam then proceeded to drive to Wanaka, a town about 2 hours from Queenstown, where the Liverpool Hut sits atop the peaks of the mountain in Mount Aspiring National Park. We then drove out to Raspberry Lake Carpark and began out trek on the West Matukituki Track at 1:30pm. Walking through pastures filled with cows, sheep and kea (the worlds only alpine parrot). Stopped at Aspiring Hut for a snack and then out again on the Liverpool Track for another 3 hours to the top. Finished at 16km getting to the Liverpool Hut just before dark!! There were 10 beds and 3 people here already, then 2 more came. Met some really cool people some from Australia and a guy from France who had been hiking from the top of NZ to the bottom (with 2 weeks to finish) and even someone from Seattle! Enjoyed a full moon while eating way too much ramen 🙂 Oh and also we saw a few Kea birds which are an endangered species and the worlds only alpine parrot. So cool!!
Woke up to the most magical sunrise in my lifetime and sat on the porch of the hut to admire the beauty. By far my favorite part of NZ thus far.
Hiked back the same way we came up totaling 32km then drove back into Wanaka where we stopped to look at the famous Wanaka Tree and then a little café before taking off to Alexandra for the night.
