Short but sweet trip to Coromandel this weekend! About a two hour drive on one of the curviest roads I’ve ever driven on but got us to a beautiful airbnb on the bay, so relaxing and the sweetest hosts.
First we went to Cathedral Cove which we made as the sun started to set. This was a pretty spectacular rock formation that is a bit of a walk from the beach but definitely worth it on a good day. After we headed to Hot Water Beach which is pretty amazing especially since we hit it right at sunset, then we had to dig in the dark. Really though I had to dig because unfortunately someone broke their foot, but I won’t name any names. So alas, I dug the hole. In the dark. Turns out I was digging in the wrong spot and it was never going to get “hot”. As the rock face of the beach is geothermal the sand can get up to 64 degrees celsius giving it the name Hot Water Beach. The geothermal activity only appears in certain parts of the sand so where I was initially digging wasn’t ever going to get hot, but luckily I was pointed in the right direction and lent a shovel making it a lot easier and definitely a better experience overall. Always meeting great people on my adventures which may be one of my favorite parts of this whole experience!!
